Questa wakes to a clear and cold Friday morning, with a temperature near 30 degrees, and the weekend ahead looks bright from start to finish. Friday turns mostly cloudy with a high near 50 degrees and a low near 29 degrees, and sunset comes at 5:00 PM. Saturday will be sunny with a high near 54 degrees, and Sunday will be sunny as well with a high near 56 degrees. No weather alerts are in effect for Questa or Taos County, and no rain is expected, so this is a good weekend to plan time outdoors, provided you dress for cold mornings and early evenings.

The centerpiece of the weekend is Wild Rivers Fire Ecology Day on Saturday, November 7, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Wild Rivers Visitor Center near Cerro. The free gathering, presented by The Paseo Project, Del Fuego, and the Forest Stewards Guild as part of the Disturbance project, explores fire, change, and renewal in northern New Mexico through art, science, stories, and community. Visitors can take part in participatory chalk art from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, explore The Medicine of Disturbance exhibition trailer throughout the day, and hear the Communities of Questa Mariachi perform from 11:00 AM to noon. From 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, a fire stories gathering marks 30 years since the Hondo Fire and invites residents to share their own memories. The organizers advise visitors to dress warmly and bring a chair.

Art lovers have a second major destination this weekend. The 45th annual Dixon Studio Tour runs Saturday and Sunday, November 7 and 8, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM in Dixon and the surrounding communities of Rinconada, Canoncito, and Apodaca, and it begins with an artists preview reception on Friday evening from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The tour is described by its organizers as the longest continuously running studio tour in New Mexico, and it offers a full day of studios, food, and valley scenery south of Taos. Elsewhere on Saturday, volunteers will clean up the Rio Fernando de Taos from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, meeting at the Taos County Clerk parking lot in Taos, and a women's fly fishing clinic will be held at 9:00 AM at Taos Junction Bridge.

If you would rather spend the weekend quietly in the gorge, the Wild Rivers Recreation Area remains a fine choice for overlooks, campgrounds, picnic areas, and rim walks above the confluence of the Rio Grande and the Red River. One important limit still applies. The Bureau of Land Management continues the closure of the La Junta Trail until further notice, while La Junta Point Overlook and Campground remain open, and visitors can reach the River Trail and the lower canyon from the Little Arsenic Springs Trail or the Big Arsenic Springs Trail. Plan for short daylight, with sunset near 4:59 PM on Saturday and 4:58 PM on Sunday, and carry warm layers for the rim, where the wind can make a sunny afternoon feel much colder.

Sunday offers the warmest and calmest day of the three, with sunshine, a high near 56 degrees, and a low near 31 degrees under a new moon. It is a good day for a second visit to the Dixon studios, a scenic drive around the Enchanted Circle, or a slow morning in the village before the week begins. However you spend it, this weekend brings together the best of late fall in the northern Rio Grande valley: clear skies, good company, local art, and time beside the river. Welcome to Questa, and enjoy the weekend.
